The Urban Dictionary defines Chubby Hubby as a man who is loved by his partner. The focus is on the man inside rather than the “chubby” part. My husband, Loren, was a Chubby Hubby, and I loved him to pieces! But one day, he came to me and told me that he was losing his breath when he bent down to tie his shoes and he was getting winded when he was going up the stairs. I was worried about his health, so I decided to help him get in shape.
My friend Evan had just opened a small studio in Middletown, and he asked me to come over and coach some classes. I asked him if I could try to create a class for dads and guys with dad bods, and he said yes! When we were trying to come up with a catchy name, Loren looked down at his belly and said, “How about Chubby Hubby?” It was cute, but I wanted to make sure that the name was inclusive and wouldn’t be a barrier for anyone who wanted to come in.
We went back and forth on this, but in the end, we decided to go with it. We wanted the class to be a place where everyone felt welcome and comfortable, regardless of their size or shape. At the very start, we had just three guys: Loren, my brother Chris, and our friend Drew. We asked them what they thought of the name, and they all loved it! They declared that if the name offended anyone, they didn’t want them in the class anyway.
So Chubby Hubby was born! It was a group of hard-working husbands and fathers who put their families first and their own health second. But they were ready to make a change, and they were excited to get started. In March of last year, we went to work.
The class has been a huge success! We’ve had guys of all shapes and sizes come through the doors, and everyone has been welcomed with open arms. We’ve seen some amazing transformations, and we’re so proud of the progress that everyone has made.
